About Upper West Side
The Upper West Side stretches between the Central Park and Riverside Park sides of Manhattan. Its residential streets include several designated historic areas, while cultural destinations range from the American Museum of Natural History to Lincoln Center. Those institutions occupy different parts of the neighborhood and have their own public entrances.
Historic areas within a larger neighborhood
The Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District has its own Landmarks Preservation Commission map. Its boundary is a defined designation within the wider Upper West Side, rather than a substitute for the neighborhood’s full geography.
Central Park West and the Riverside side create different park-facing settings. Streets and avenues between them place individual homes in relation to those two outdoor edges.
Museum and performing-arts destinations
The American Museum of Natural History has entrances at Central Park West and 79th Street, West 81st Street, and Columbus Avenue at 79th Street. These provide distinct approaches to the same institution.
Lincoln Center’s campus lies farther south, between West 62nd and 65th streets and Columbus and Amsterdam avenues. Its performing-arts setting is separate from the museum blocks.
A public library on Amsterdam Avenue
St. Agnes Library is at 444 Amsterdam Avenue, between West 81st and 82nd streets. It adds a public reading and library-service destination near the museum area.
The branch address, museum entrances and Lincoln Center campus give useful named points within a long Manhattan neighborhood. None establishes an identical trip from every Upper West Side home.
