Manhattan’s great landscape park, with lakeside walks, woodland paths, broad lawns, and landmarks such as Bethesda Terrace and Belvedere Castle.

Central Park brings a surprisingly varied landscape into the middle of Manhattan. A walk can pass from open lawns and busy promenades to wooded paths and quiet stretches of water within a few minutes. Its scale rewards choosing an area to explore, rather than trying to cover every landmark in one outing.
For a first visit, the Lake and Bethesda Terrace make a useful starting point for a walk around the park’s central landscapes. The Ramble offers a more winding route through woodland, while Belvedere Castle provides a memorable destination farther north. The Conservancy’s self-guided routes also introduce the Great Lawn, the North Woods, and the history of Seneca Village, the predominantly Black community displaced during the park’s creation.
Choose an entrance near the places you most want to see and keep the official park map handy: paths do not simply follow Manhattan’s street grid. The Conservancy publishes seasonal guides, restroom locations, and alerts, which are especially useful when planning a longer walk or visiting with children. Individual attractions and activities have their own schedules.
