About Old Silk Stocking
Old Silk Stocking’s older residential streets sit north of downtown Norman, around Peters Avenue and Ruth Updegraff Park. The area participates in city neighborhood projects and a targeted homebuyer assistance program. Porter Health Village now provides urgent care at the former hospital site.
Older streets north of downtown
Old Silk Stocking lies north of downtown Norman, between the railroad corridor and Porter Avenue. Its residential character includes mature street trees, angled streets and triangular blocks, with a stone-lined creek channel running through the neighborhood. Peters Avenue and Ruth Updegraff Park provide recognizable reference points among the older homes.
The neighborhood’s history does not make it one of Norman’s three locally designated historic districts: those are Chautauqua, Miller and Southridge. An Old Silk Stocking address therefore should not be assumed to carry the same historic-review requirements as a house in those districts.
Targeted assistance for eligible homebuyers
In April 2026, Norman announced up to $14,999 in down payment assistance for eligible buyers in Old Silk Stocking, Original Townsite and First Courthouse. The announcement specifies income limits and a primary-residence commitment, including five years of occupancy for full forgiveness.
Neighborhood Housing Services Oklahoma administers applications at 405-231-4663. Its Norman program page links guidelines and the eligible-property map. Confirm the address, current funding and buyer requirements with the administrator before including assistance in a purchase budget.
A park and house museum on Peters Avenue
Ruth Updegraff Park, at 505 N. Peters Avenue, is a small neighborhood green space with a gazebo. The Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum is nearby at 508 N. Peters Avenue.
The museum’s current visitor page lists Tuesday–Saturday opening from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with guided and self-guided tours. Staffing changes can alter those hours, and closure notices appear on its calendar.
Urgent care at Porter Health Village
Older neighborhood descriptions refer to the hospital on North Porter Avenue. Its emergency department closed in July 2024, when the flagship hospital moved to 3300 Hospital Parkway.
The Porter Health Village site at 901 N. Porter Avenue now includes urgent care, currently listed from 7 a.m.–7 p.m. daily at 405-307-7900. This is not the former emergency department.
Following neighborhood improvements
Old Silk Stocking participates in Norman’s Strong Neighborhoods Initiative alongside First Courthouse and Original Townsite. The city’s neighborhood page provides a place to follow local plans and share concerns about streets, lighting and other projects. It also describes the voluntary neighborhood association, reactivated in 2023.
