Loft housing, everyday shopping and journeys beyond the historic core
About Old Market
Old Market offers loft housing among Downtown Omaha’s brick streets, restaurants and shops. Godega provides convenience groceries on 11th Street, ORBT boarding points lie farther north on Dodge and Douglas, and the Downtown library is nearby on Jones Street. The Saturday farmers market is seasonal; its 2026 run has ended.
Loft homes share the district with restaurants and shops
Old Market’s former wholesale buildings have been adapted for loft apartments as well as restaurants, galleries and retail. The National Park Service describes preserved brick streets, covered sidewalks and outdoor cafés. This mix puts residential life close to commercial activity.
In a converted building, the useful viewing details are the residential entrance, the stairs or lift to the apartment, and which rooms face the street or outdoor seating. The mapped outline shows the historic district; nearby homes marketed as Old Market may sit outside it.
Convenience shopping continues after the seasonal market ends
Godega at 423 South 11th Street describes itself as a convenience market and coffee bar, selling grocery items, ready-to-eat food, personal-care products and household necessities. Its Old Market store posts daily hours of 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
The Saturday farmers market is at 11th and Jackson. Its 2026 season ran May 2–October 10, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and has ended as of October 18. A winter food routine therefore needs regular shops as well as any future market season. The organization’s Sunday market is in Aksarben Village, elsewhere in Omaha.
ORBT boarding points on Dodge and Douglas
ORBT links Downtown with Westroads along the Dodge corridor, including Nebraska Medicine, Dundee and UNO. Metro lists Downtown boarding locations at 1220 Dodge Street and 1009 Douglas Street, north of the Old Market commercial blocks.
For a home near 12th and Howard and a destination such as UNO, the whole journey includes the walk north, the appropriate ORBT departure and the walk from the destination stop to the building. The trip home can end on a different Downtown street from the outward boarding point. Metro’s route page links its timetable and current alerts.
The Downtown library is on Jones Street, with Sunday afternoon hours
Downtown Branch Library at 1401 Jones Street is nearby, west of the historic core. It lists regular hours of 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday–Saturday and 1–5 p.m. Sunday. This is the Downtown Branch, separate from Omaha Central Library on Dodge Street.
The Sunday opening begins in the afternoon, while weekday evening access extends later than the Friday and Saturday schedule. The branch page links its events and holiday closures. Hours were checked October 18, 2026.
Bemis offers free exhibitions and a Thursday evening option
Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts is nearby at 724 South 12th Street, at Leavenworth. Exhibitions, public programs and LOW END performances have free admission. Its posted gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesday–Sunday, extending to 9 p.m. Thursday; Monday and Tuesday are closed.
An exhibition visit can fit a Thursday evening routine, while a performance needs the event calendar rather than the gallery hours alone. The center is beyond the mapped historic core, even though it describes its setting as Old Market.
