Benicia Capitol State Historic Park preserves California’s only surviving capitol building from before the government settled in Sacramento.

The brick structure served as the state’s seat of government in 1853 and 1854 and now provides a setting for exploring that early political history.
The photograph shows the actual capitol exterior. Check current museum opening days and admission before travelling; the historic building opens on selected days rather than throughout the week. Nearby historic-house access and organized tours have separate arrangements. Allow time to look at the exterior and interpretation, respecting closed rooms and any temporary conservation work.
