Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute examines the struggle for civil and human rights through Birmingham’s history and its wider national significance. The Barriers Gallery interprets segregation in schools, restaurants and transport, while the Movement Gallery follows organizing and events from 1955 to 1963.

The Processional Gallery overlooks Kelly Ingram Park, linking the museum’s interpretation with a nearby site of demonstrations. Other galleries address Birmingham’s first Black mayor, Richard Arrington Jr., and the international scope of human rights. The institute presents this history through artifacts, personal testimony and exhibitions.
