Historic housing, hillside trips and everyday destinations

About College Hill

College Hill rises above the Providence River, with historic houses around Benefit Street and Brown and RISD campuses nearby. Local routines include Thayer Street bus stops, Prospect Terrace and the Athenæum; a supermarket sits on North Main Street.

Historic houses on a hillside

College Hill’s residential setting runs uphill from the Providence River, alongside Brown University and RISD. The city’s historic-district profile describes buildings ranging from colonial houses to early twentieth-century triple-deckers. Benefit Street’s older homes are one part of that wider housing mix.

The photograph shows 135 Benefit Street in November 2011, including its raised entrance and stone foundation. For properties within a locally designated historic district, exterior changes require Historic District Commission review. The city’s preservation maps identify that overlay separately from the neighborhood.

Groceries on North Main Street

Whole Foods Market’s University store is at 601 North Main Street, with published hours of 8 a.m.–9 p.m. daily. For College Hill residents, it provides a grocery destination on the North Main corridor, below the hillside streets. Hours were checked October 19, 2026.

Thayer Street buses connect with Kennedy Plaza

RIPTA Route 1, Eddy/Hope/Benefit, links Kennedy Plaza with the Tunnel & Thayer and Hope & Olney stops. These are useful reference points for homes around the Brown campus and the Hope Street side of College Hill. The linked timetable distinguishes the route’s branches and destinations.

Current Brown faculty, staff and students can ride RIPTA at no charge using a valid Brown ID through U-PASS. A Brown Visitor ID does not qualify; living near the campus alone does not provide the benefit.

A small park on Congdon Street

Prospect Terrace occupies 0.28 acres at 60 Congdon Street. The city lists seating, picnic areas and walking paths, making it a small outdoor stop within College Hill. The park is listed as open year-round.

Athenæum visiting and borrowing are different

The Providence Athenæum at 251 Benefit Street is a membership library. Visitors can use its main level and lower Reading Room, with free Wi-Fi; borrowing is a membership benefit. Adult weekday admission is pay-what-you-can, with $5 suggested; weekend admission is $5, with exemptions including members and children 12 and under.

Regular hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.; Monday is closed. Summer hours also close Sundays. The rear entrance on College Street has no stairs, but there is no elevator between levels. Staff arrange access through a separate lower Reading Room door. These arrangements were checked October 19, 2026.
