Sacramento city guide: Midtown and East Sacramento

Explore Midtown’s market and murals, the history at Sutter’s Fort, McKinley Park’s rose garden and the route 30 stops connecting these Sacramento neighborhoods.

Midtown brings Sacramento’s Saturday market, murals and dining streets together on the central grid. To the east, East Sacramento adds residential blocks and McKinley Park’s rose garden, play areas and community arts center.

The stops below run east from 20th and K streets toward Sutter’s Fort and McKinley Park. The Sacramento city overview covers other parts of the city, and the neighborhood directory shows the researched profiles available so far.

Saturday morning around 20th and K

The Midtown Farmers Market meets on Saturdays in Lavender Heights, with Market Square at 20th and K. Produce, prepared food, crafts and other local businesses occupy several surrounding blocks, and the weekly program includes live music.

The organizer’s event calendar and vendor listings give the hours for individual Saturdays. Rain alone does not close the market, but hazardous wind, air quality or thunderstorms can lead to cancellation.

A mural walk along K and J streets

The Midtown Association’s public art walk identifies Maren Conrad’s “Prosperity Through Perseverance” at 1050 20th Street, close to the market. The work draws on a koi-and-dragon legend and honors Chinese immigrants who helped build the transcontinental railroad.

Farther east on K Street, John S. Huerta’s “Frida” is listed at 2331 K Street, by 24th Street. Jeremiah Kille’s work at 2708 J Street adds another stop closer to Sutter’s Fort.

Sutter’s Fort: an east entrance and a wider history

Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park fills the block bounded by K, L, 26th and 28th streets. Its entrance is the East Gate facing 28th Street. The park has no on-site parking; nearby street parking is metered.

The fort stands on Nisenan homelands. Its exhibits and revised interpretation address European and American colonization alongside the lives of Native Nisenan and Miwok people and Hawaiian builders. State Parks also addresses the exploited Native labor that sustained the fort’s industries.

McKinley Park’s rose garden and arts center

In East Sacramento, McKinley Park at 601 Alhambra Boulevard brings a jogging trail, play areas, sports courts and picnic spaces together. The Frederick N. Evans Rose Garden occupies an oblong space that was once a running track. Evans, the city’s first parks superintendent, began improving it in 1929; it was named in his honor in 1946.

Beside the garden, the Shepard Garden and Arts Center at 3330 McKinley Boulevard hosts clubs focused on gardening, flower arranging, conservation, history and arts such as painting, ceramics and weaving.

Route 30 links the two neighborhoods

SacRT’s route 30 serves J Street through Midtown and East Sacramento. The CSUS-bound stop list includes J at 19th, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 28th streets, Alhambra Boulevard and 33rd Street. From the J-and-Alhambra area, McKinley Park lies to the north along Alhambra.

The Sacramento Valley Station-bound route uses J Street through East Sacramento, then Alhambra at K and L Street through Midtown. Its L Street stops include 28th, 26th, 24th, 22nd, 21st and 19th streets. The return trip therefore uses a different Midtown street from the eastbound trip; each linked stop list leads to the agency’s arrival predictions.
