Residential blocks and the Fab Forties

East Sacramento’s older homes and tree-lined streets continue east from Midtown, interspersed with restaurants, cafés and neighborhood businesses. The Fab Forties are one recognizable residential part of this wider area.

The Fab Forties’ winter holiday light displays draw visitors to the decorated residential streets.

McKinley Park and the Frederick N. Evans rose garden

William McKinley Park is at 601 Alhambra Boulevard. The city’s park directory lists a jogging trail, tennis and basketball courts, sports fields, play areas, swimming facilities and the Frederick N. Evans Memorial Rose Garden.

The October 2021 photograph shows the rose garden’s planted beds, trellis and seating. Clunie Community Center and the Shepard Garden and Arts Center add community facilities beside the park’s outdoor spaces.

Garden clubs, arts groups and neighborhood concerts

The Shepard Garden and Arts Center hosts clubs interested in horticulture, flower arranging, conservation, history and the arts. Its meeting spaces serve activities ranging from painting and ceramics to weaving and metalwork near the rose garden.

The volunteer-led East Sacramento Community Association formed in 1958 as the East Sacramento Improvement Association and adopted its current name in 2020. It is also a co-founder and sponsor of the Pops in the Parks concert series.
