About Midtown
Midtown mixes tree-lined residential streets with galleries, restaurants and shops in Sacramento’s central grid. The Saturday farmers market brings stalls into Lavender Heights, while Sutter’s Fort occupies a historic block farther east.
Residential streets alongside Midtown’s arts activity
Midtown’s central grid brings homes close to restaurants, shops and cultural spaces. The April 2018 photograph looks west along H Street from 25th Street, showing houses, sidewalks and a mature tree canopy.
Second Saturday programming adds gallery exhibitions, theatres, art pop-ups and a self-guided mural walk to the area’s regular businesses. Participating venues and activities vary by month.
The Saturday market around 20th and K streets
The Midtown Farmers Market occupies several blocks in Lavender Heights, with 1050 20th Street as its published address. Its vendors include farmers, prepared-food sellers, artisans and other small businesses.
The 2026 market footprint follows 20th Street from I Street to Capitol Avenue and K Street from 19th to 21st streets. The market takes place every Saturday, adding temporary stalls to a neighborhood of permanent shops and restaurants.
Sutter’s Fort and the history of its Midtown block
Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park occupies the block bounded by K, L, 26th and 28th streets, with its visitor entrance facing 28th Street. The site was an economic center of European colonial settlement from 1839 to 1849 on the homeland of the Nisenan people.
California State Parks’ revised interpretation addresses Native peoples’ experiences and the exploited labor that supported the fort’s industries. Its current redesign of exhibits and programs follows engagement with Tribal partners and the public.
