About Mission
The Mission District brings Mission Street, Valencia Street and 24th Street into a neighborhood known for Latino businesses and public art. Murals appear on buildings and in alleys, while Dolores Park supplies a large outdoor gathering place. BART stations at 16th and 24th streets connect different parts of the district with the region.
Three commercial streets with different settings
Mission Street carries shops and restaurants through the district. Valencia Street adds cafes and independent retail, while 24th Street has a strong concentration of Latino-owned businesses.
These corridors give the neighborhood several commercial centers. They are more useful points of orientation than treating every Mission address as belonging to one restaurant or entertainment strip.
Public art and cultural landmarks
The Women’s Building on 18th Street is a prominent mural site, and Balmy Alley is another destination for outdoor art. Mission Dolores adds a much older historic landmark.
Dolores Park offers open space and skyline views, while the Roxie Theater on 16th Street provides an indoor film destination. The district’s cultural life therefore includes parks, historic buildings, public art and an independent cinema.
Two BART station areas
BART has separate 16th Street/Mission and 24th Street/Mission stations. Both provide access to the regional rail network from Mission Street.
Their station pages give current entrances, service and access information. The two locations anchor different parts of the district rather than a single shared arrival point.
