About Soulard

Soulard’s brick houses, flats and alley buildings sit south of downtown around a public market. Market shopping follows a Wednesday–Saturday pattern, Pontiac Square provides a neighborhood playground, and Route 73 links the brewery end of the area with Civic Center.

Brick flats, townhouses and alley buildings

Soulard’s nineteenth-century streets developed on narrow lots, with brick buildings close to the sidewalk. Historic housing includes four-family flats, alley houses and narrow flounder houses, as well as larger Second Empire townhouses.

That mix includes homes behind the main streetfront buildings as well as homes facing the street. The city’s historic district profile describes Federal, Italianate and Second Empire architecture across the area.

Market shopping is busiest on Saturdays

Soulard Market at 730 Carroll Street trades regularly Wednesday through Saturday. Saturday has the greatest vendor participation; fewer stalls operate midweek, even when the market is open.

Route 73 connects the brewery area with Civic Center

Metro’s 73 Carondelet timetable lists Anheuser Busch Visitors Center and downtown Civic Center Transit Center as timepoints on the same route. It provides a bus connection from the brewery end of Soulard toward the downtown transit hub.

The operator provides separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables. The schedule checked October 19 is effective September 14–November 29, 2026; use the direction-specific table for the return journey.

Pontiac Square has a playground and field

Pontiac Square is a 1.5-acre city park within Soulard’s residential blocks. Its listed facilities include a playground and multi-purpose field, with stone retaining walls around part of the playground area.

Barr Library is west of Soulard

Barr Library at 1701 South Jefferson Avenue provides reservable computers, printing and Wi-Fi west of the neighborhood. Its Monday hours run noon–8 p.m.; Tuesday–Thursday it opens 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. It is closed Sundays.

Barr also houses a Creative Experience space for digital projects.
