The postal name is only a starting point
Arlington is a county; Alexandria and Falls Church are independent cities with postal names also used beyond their boundaries. Bethesda and Silver Spring are unincorporated Montgomery County communities, while Rockville is a city. Confirm the jurisdiction for the exact property before choosing a tax, housing or parking resource.
Parking has two separate jobs
For a DC moving truck, consult the DDOT permit portal. For your own car after moving, check DC DMV residential parking information and address eligibility. A building's loading reservation is another separate arrangement, and a residential permit does not guarantee a vacant space.
Utilities follow the lease and the address
Ask which accounts are yours and which services the landlord or association handles. Save the start dates and the maintenance contacts. The Office of the People's Counsel is a useful District utility-consumer resource; choose the appropriate provider and jurisdiction for a home outside DC.
Keep a first-week file
Collect the lease or closing documents, access instructions, parking information, account confirmations and waste arrangements in one place. Record the urgent repair number separately from ordinary maintenance requests. Use District services for the relevant DC task rather than guessing that one department handles every issue. This small file gives you a practical starting point when the first delivery, bill or repair question arrives.
Next useful step
Moving into DC: the curb, the rowhouse steps and the building reservation
