Determine which jurisdiction controls the curb
A moving address in Washington, Arlington, Alexandria or Montgomery County needs the relevant local process. Do not apply a DC street-use instruction to a Maryland or Virginia home. For a District address, begin with DDOT's permitting portal and identify the moving-truck or reserved-parking requirements that apply. Review current lead times, fees and sign instructions before booking rather than relying on an old blog post.
A building reservation is a separate task
Ask management whether you need an elevator slot, loading-dock booking, insurance certificate, deposit or a particular delivery window. Confirm both the public unloading arrangement and the private building access. One does not automatically provide the other. Send the mover the loading entrance and access instructions, since the address on the lease may lead to a lobby where furniture cannot be brought in.
A rowhouse move starts with measuring
Inspect the front steps, basement entrance, stair turns and narrowest doors. If moving into an English-basement unit, establish which entrance the mover must use and whether large furniture can follow that route. Tell the mover about the floor, carry distance and parking constraints before accepting the quote. Do not assume that a large room means every item can pass through the approach to it.
Align accounts with possession
Ask which utilities you arrange directly and which are included or billed through the building. Confirm electricity, water and any gas responsibilities in writing, along with internet installation access. The DC Office of the People's Counsel provides utility-consumer resources for District residents; use the appropriate provider and jurisdiction for a home outside DC. Schedule service for the day you receive access and keep the confirmations available offline during the move.
Separate moving permission from residential parking
A truck arrangement does not establish where you can keep your own car afterward. Check DC DMV's residential parking guidance for address eligibility and the relevant rules if you intend to use street parking. If the lease includes a private space, inspect it and obtain the access device at handover. A permit should not be interpreted as a guarantee of an empty space outside your door.
Finish with a documented handover
Photograph the condition, record unresolved issues and confirm keys, access cards and the maintenance channel. Find the waste and recycling arrangements before unpacking produces a hallway of boxes. Keep essentials for the first night with you, including medication, chargers and bedding. Then identify the nearest useful shop and the stop you will use the next morning. Save the mover agreement, street permit, building instructions and account confirmations together; those are the documents that explain the move if a question or disputed charge arises later.
