Dupont Circle combines older rowhouses, converted apartments and larger residential buildings around Connecticut Avenue and P Street NW. The circle’s park, Red Line station and Sunday market are distinct local destinations, with station entrances on opposite sides of the circle. West End, southwest of Dupont, adds a library and other services beyond the immediate circle.
A rental example: utilities and parking are separate costs
The Drake, at 1355 17th Street NW, offers studios, junior one-bedroom, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. Its operator lists a fitness center, resident lounge, rooftop deck, package reception and bike storage.
Current listings generally include utilities except cable, telephone and internet, and advertise no security deposit or annual amenity fee. Underground parking is separately advertised at $300–$350 a month. Some listings also specify application and move-in fees; the absence of a security deposit is therefore different from having no upfront charges. These are this building’s published terms, checked October 22, 2026, rather than a neighborhood-wide rental offer.
The Rental Accommodations Division records most nongovernment rental units as rent-stabilized or exempt. Federal- and District-owned units have registration exceptions. Historic architecture alone does not establish a unit’s coverage. The DC renting guide explains the unit-level rules in more detail.
Two Metro entrances, with elevator access at Q Street
Dupont Circle is on the Red Line, with a north entrance at Q Street and a south entrance at 19th Street. WMATA’s elevator and escalator directory lists the street elevator at the Q Street entrance, followed by separate elevators to the two rail platforms. That makes the north entrance the relevant starting point for an elevator journey. Live equipment status can change.
The Red Line connects directly with Metro Center and Union Station. WMATA’s current maps also show the bus network; the DC transport guide covers transfers and neighborhood connections.
Connecticut Avenue works affect bus boarding
WMATA’s Connecticut Avenue construction advisory describes closures of surface/access lanes between the circle and Q Street NW, with D74 and D96 detours. For D74, it identifies alternative stops on New Hampshire Avenue at 20th Street and N Street. For southbound D96, it identifies 19th Street at N Street.
The advisory suggests the south/19th Street rail entrance for some bus-to-rail transfers. That detour guidance is separate from the elevator route at Q Street. Its posted advisory period extends to September 2027; actual work and stop arrangements are updated through WMATA and the DDOT project page.
The Sunday market and West End Library
The FRESHFARM Dupont Circle market runs year-round on Sundays, 8:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m., on 20th Street NW between Massachusetts and Connecticut Avenues. The listed address is 1600 20th Street NW. Vendors include produce growers, meat and dairy producers, bakers and prepared-food sellers. The operator strongly discourages bringing dogs or other pets into the market.
West End Library, at 2301 L Street NW, serves southern Dupont as well as West End and Foggy Bottom. Its branch page lists computers, printing and scanning, study and meeting rooms, Wi-Fi and assistive technology. Monday–Wednesday hours are 9 a.m.–8 p.m.; Thursday opens at noon and closes at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday hours are 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday hours are 1–5 p.m. The phone is 202-724-8707.
Culture around the circle
Dupont Circle Park centers on the memorial fountain described by the National Park Service. Kramers provides a bookstore stop on Connecticut Avenue.
The Phillips Collection, at 1600 21st Street NW, posts regular museum hours of 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Tuesday–Sunday, with Monday closure. General adult admission is $20, and visitors aged 18 or younger enter free. Heurich House Museum, at 1307 New Hampshire Avenue NW, publishes separate information for house tours, the garden and events. Its arrival page says there is no onsite parking.
Historic designation and residential parking
The Dupont Circle Historic District was established in 1976 and expanded in 1984 and 2005. The Office of Planning provides district maps and contributing-building information. That mapped designation is distinct from the broader neighborhood name used in property descriptions.
A DC Residential Parking Permit depends on an eligible address on a designated block and the vehicle’s registration. It gives permit privileges in the applicable area, without reserving a street space or including private garage parking. The Drake’s separately priced garage illustrates why those two parking arrangements should remain separate in a housing budget.
