Brookland brings the Red Line, Monroe Street’s apartment buildings and artist studios together with residential streets and major university and religious campuses. The station and Arts Walk are useful starting points for a home search, but they describe only part of the area. The linked neighborhood pages for Michigan Park, Woodridge and Edgewood cover adjoining communities separately.
Monroe Street apartments: four buildings, different interiors
Monroe Street Market, with its leasing address at 625 Monroe Street NE, comprises Cornerstone, Portland Flats, Brookland Works and Everton. The operator describes concrete floors and exposed ceilings at Brookland Works, alongside full-size washers and dryers. Everton has a rooftop deck and courtyard with grills and a wading pool.
The community amenities directory lists garage parking, EV charging, bicycle storage, onsite storage and fitness centers. It does not establish the charges or availability for those extras. Leasing can be reached at 833-638-7659 for the chosen building’s terms. This is one apartment community’s published information, not a neighborhood rent estimate or a statement that a particular apartment is available.
For rentals in houses or other buildings, the DC renting guide covers unit licensing, registration and rent-stabilization records. The Washington moving guide covers broader settling-in services.
Metro access: the elevator is at the bus terminal
Brookland–CUA serves the Red Line. WMATA’s equipment directory identifies the street-to-mezzanine elevator at the bus terminal and a second elevator from mezzanine to platform. It lists an escalator on the Catholic University side separately. Someone who needs a step-free route should use the bus-terminal elevator approach rather than assume the university-side entrance has the same equipment.
The directory provides current outage information for these elevators and escalators. The DC transport guide explains connections across the wider network.
Groceries and the Saturday market on Monroe Street
Trader Joe’s Brookland store is at 701 Monroe Street NE. Its directory posts 9 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, with the parking garage entrance on 8th Street. The store phone is 202-677-7460.
The FRESHFARM Monroe Street market operates at the Arts Walk and Plaza, 716 Monroe Street NE. The operator currently posts Saturdays 9 a.m.–1 p.m., changing to 10 a.m.–1 p.m. for January–March 2027. That weekly produce and specialty-food market is distinct from the apartment development of the same name.
Brookland Arts Walk also contains independent artist studios. The studio directory lists individual opening times and appointment contacts; Saturday market hours do not mean every studio is open throughout that period.
Turkey Thicket for swimming, exercise and outdoor play
Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, 1100 Michigan Avenue NE, has an indoor pool, gym, weight room and toddler room. Outdoor facilities listed by DC DPR include tennis and basketball courts, a walking track, playground and spray park.
The recreation center’s contact is 202-576-9238; the aquatic center has a separate number, 202-576-9235. DPR’s general building hours should not be read as a pool-session or class timetable. The aquatic contact is the useful starting point for a regular swimming routine.
Woodridge Library is a separate trip east
Woodridge Library’s branch directory places it at 1801 Hamlin Street NE, away from the station and Monroe Street studios. It lists 36 public computers, three meeting rooms, study rooms, printing and scanning, and a parking lot.
Regular hours are 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday–Wednesday, noon–8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Friday–Saturday and 1–5 p.m. Sunday. The branch phone is 202-541-6226. Thursday morning is therefore not an option for an early printing or computer session.
University and Basilica visits
Catholic University and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception are institutional destinations, separate from the apartment and shopping development.
The Basilica’s visitor information gives its address as 400 Michigan Avenue NE and regular opening hours as 6 a.m.–6 p.m. daily. Its designated visitor parking is free during operating hours; the main visitor lot is reached from Harewood Road NE, north of Michigan Avenue. Those visitor spaces are not neighborhood residential parking.
