About Garden District

Baton Rouge’s Garden District includes Roseland Terrace, Drehr Place and Kleinert Terrace, with historic houses, porches and rear alleys. Drehr Place’s local historic designation matters for exterior renovation plans. City-Brooks Community Park lies alongside the neighborhood, while BET-R supermarket is nearby in the Perkins Road overpass area.

Roseland Terrace, Drehr Place and Kleinert Terrace

The Garden District brings together Roseland Terrace, Drehr Place and Kleinert Terrace. Roseland Terrace lies between Government Street, South 18th Street, Myrtle Avenue and South 22nd Street; Drehr Place continues east toward St. Rose Avenue. Kleinert Terrace is south of Myrtle Avenue, toward Perkins Road and Broussard Avenue.

The housing character includes raised wood-frame bungalows with front porches, alongside Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and other early twentieth-century houses. Roseland Terrace has relatively small lots and rear alleys, with utility poles placed behind the houses.

Drehr Place has local historic protections

Drehr Place became a local historic district in 2005. The city distinguishes this from National Register recognition: local designation brings design controls for exterior alterations, while National Register status alone does not require a Certificate of Appropriateness. Drehr Place’s local review rules do not automatically apply to the entire Garden District.

Within a local historic district, exterior changes visible from a public street require that certificate unless determined to be ordinary maintenance and repair. Planning staff or the Historic Preservation Commission handles the review, depending on the work. The city’s application page explains the process, and the civic association links Drehr Place’s historic building survey.

Grocery shopping by the Perkins Road overpass

BET-R Neighborhood Supermarket is nearby at 2812 Kalurah Street in the Perkins Road overpass area, south of the Garden District’s residential streets. The store lists daily hours of 7 a.m.–8 p.m. and phone 225-343-2361. Its departments include produce, meat and seafood, groceries, a bakery/deli, and wine and spirits.

The deli offers prepared meals including plate lunches, and the store publishes a weekly advertisement.

City-Brooks Park and activities for young children

City-Brooks Community Park adjoins the Garden District and City Park Lake. The visitor bureau lists walking trails, a dog park, playground facilities, tennis and golf among its amenities.

Knock Knock Children’s Museum is inside City-Brooks at 1900 Dalrymple Drive. It serves children from birth through age eight and their families, with 18 play-based learning zones. Published general admission is $18 per visitor aged 12 months and older, before sales tax; infants younger than 12 months enter free. Adults need a child in their party for an ordinary visit, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

The museum is closed on Mondays and has its own admission and program calendar. Its visitor information also describes memberships, sensory resources and Play4All sessions. Park access does not include museum admission.
