Government Street housing, daily shopping and CATS Route 12
About Mid City
Government Street connects Mid City’s local shops, restaurants and grocery shopping with nearby residential blocks. Housing examples include Motor City’s apartments and Government Corridor’s rehabilitated single- and duplex-style homes. CATS Route 12 follows Government Street before continuing toward Jefferson Highway and the Mall of Louisiana.
Apartment buildings and scattered-site homes
Motor City at 2040 Gayosa Street offers one- and two-bedroom apartments, with balconies in selected homes. Shared amenities include parking, bicycle storage, a pool, fitness center, business center and parcel room. Its pages differ on laundry equipment: the home page describes installed washers and dryers, while the amenities list specifies connections. That detail needs confirmation for the apartment being offered.
Government Corridor provides a different housing format: Gulf Coast Housing Partnership rehabilitated single- and duplex-style homes near Government Street, with one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts. The project was completed in January 2024, with renovated kitchens and bathrooms, new windows, HVAC systems and energy-efficient appliances.
Government Street groceries and neighborhood businesses
Calandro’s Mid-City supermarket is at 4142 Government Street, at Edison Street between North Acadian Thruway and South Foster Drive. Its departments include produce, meat and seafood, a deli and a bakery. The store lists Monday–Saturday hours of 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; its phone is 225-383-7815.
The visitor bureau’s Mid City map also identifies restaurants, shops and other businesses along the wider corridor. Barracuda Taco Stand is at 2504 Government Street, while Anthony’s Italian Deli is farther east at 5575 Government Street. The map supplies each business’s own website and location.
Route 12 along Government Street
CATS Route 12 links the Florida Boulevard terminal with the Mall of Louisiana via Government Street, Lobdell Avenue, Jefferson Highway and Bluebonnet Boulevard. Its corridor includes Baton Rouge Community College, the Office of Motor Vehicles, Independence Community Park and the Main Library. CATS publishes separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables.
Geaux Pass replaced UMO as the operator’s mobile fare app in August 2026. A physical reloadable card is available at the terminal, 2250 Florida Boulevard, and cash remains accepted. Route and service help is available at 225-389-8282.
Homebuyer education and home-preservation programs
Mid City Redevelopment Alliance’s Homeownership Center offers one-to-one pre-purchase counseling and a homebuyer-education course. Its listed topics include credit, homebuying budgets, mortgage options and pre-approval. The center’s website links an enrollment application.
The nonprofit also lists home-rehabilitation and home-preservation programs, alongside foreclosure-prevention and financial-literacy services.
