A Buffalo home search along Elmwood Avenue covers several different settings. Allentown brings older residential streets closer to Downtown and Main Street. Elmwood Bryant includes the Crane Library stretch of Elmwood; farther north, Elmwood Bidwell adds the broad parkway and seasonal market. Elmwood Village is a wider corridor, so a listing using that name still needs a more precise location.
Choose a starting point for your weekday
Priority | Starting point | What changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
Main Street rail | Allentown’s Main Street side | Allen–Medical Campus is a paid underground station; a home farther west has a different approach. |
Library and Elmwood errands | Elmwood Bryant | Crane Branch is at Elmwood and Highland; food shops sit at different points along the corridor. |
Parkway green space | Elmwood Bidwell | Parkway-facing homes sit across a roadway from the green; the market adds seasonal Saturday-morning shopping. |
Housing: smaller houses, apartments and parkway frontage
The Allentown Association’s residential history describes modest College Street houses, converted row-house apartments on St. Louis Place and the former St. Mary’s school at 125 Edward Street converted to condominiums. The association’s 2002 account describes the building history; it does not list current vacancies.
In Bryant, Bryant Place at 334–346 Bryant Street provides a visible example of four-story brick apartment buildings. The February 2022 photograph shows the exterior; current vacancies and lift access need building information. A parkway-facing Bidwell home offers another setting: the public green occupies a central median across a roadway from the houses.
At a converted house, ask whether the entrance, laundry and outdoor space are shared. For a larger apartment building, establish the route from the street to the actual unit. These building-level differences can change daily life more than the broad Elmwood Village label.
Food shopping runs along Elmwood, with a Saturday limit
PriceRite at 250 Elmwood Avenue is listed by 211 Western New York as a public grocery destination near the Allentown end of the corridor. Farther north, Lexington Co-op at 807 Elmwood Avenue posts daily hours of 7 a.m.–11 p.m. A shortlist near one shop can place the other in a separate errand, particularly when carrying a full grocery load.
The Elmwood Village Farmers Market operates at Elmwood and Bidwell on Saturdays, 8 a.m.–1 p.m., May–November. It adds seasonal food shopping to the Bidwell setting, but a Saturday afternoon arrival misses its posted trading window. Keep a year-round grocery destination in the plan. Store and market information was checked October 18, 2026.
Downtown trips: Elmwood bus or Main Street rail
NFTA Route 20 Elmwood links Downtown with Orchard Loop via Elmwood, Delaware and Sheridan. Its timetable includes Elmwood at North, Delavan and Kenmore; Downtown-bound service lists South Division and Washington. A workplace near another Downtown street still requires an onward walk or connection, and the return boarding location should be read separately.
For an Allentown address closer to Main Street, Allen–Medical Campus provides an underground rail option. NFTA’s fare-zone information distinguishes paid underground stations from the free Downtown surface zone. An Allen station journey therefore needs a fare even when the destination is Downtown. The operator’s current notices cover service changes affecting the journey.
Crane Library: evening hours differ from Sunday
Crane Branch is at 633 Elmwood Avenue, at Highland between Lexington and West Ferry. It lists two reservable meeting/study rooms and regular Monday and Tuesday hours of noon–8 p.m.; Sunday is closed. That makes it a possible evening resource on those weekdays, with a different plan needed on Sunday.
The branch identifies accessibility exceptions for its auditorium and restrooms. Its page also retains an older construction notice, so use the library’s date-specific opening calendar for the day you need and arrange room use with the branch.
Green space: a small common or a long parkway

Allentown’s Arlington Park and Days Park give nearby homes small green-space destinations. Bidwell has a longer parkway landscape between Colonial Circle and Soldiers Circle. Colonial joins Richmond Avenue; Soldiers joins Lincoln and Chapin parkways. Lincoln continues north toward Delaware Park, giving a Bidwell outing a different shape from sitting near an Allentown common.
