Older housing, Downtown and medical-campus journeys, and everyday errands

About Allentown

Allentown combines older houses, apartment conversions and small residential greens near Allen Street. Elmwood bus trips and the Main Street rail approach serve different parts of the neighborhood. A home search here benefits from distinguishing the residential entrance, the work journey and the grocery options on Elmwood Avenue.

Cottages, larger houses and apartment conversions

College Street’s houses vary in scale on either side of Allen Street, while St. Louis Place includes buildings converted to row-house apartments. The neighborhood association also records the former St. Mary’s school at 125 Edward Street becoming condominiums.

That variety matters when arranging a viewing: establish whether the address offers an entire house, one apartment or a room with shared facilities. For an upper-floor unit in an older building, ask how the entrance and stairs work with the belongings or mobility equipment you use; an architectural style alone does not answer that question.

Choose the Elmwood bus or the Main Street rail approach

Route 20 Elmwood includes an Elmwood/North timepoint and links the corridor with Downtown. Allen–Medical Campus provides a rail approach on Main Street, so a home nearer College Street and one nearer Main Street start with different walks to transit.

Allen–Medical Campus is an underground station in the paid-fare section; Downtown’s free surface-rail rule does not make boarding there free. For a medical-campus shift or a Downtown job, use the workplace entrance and return time, and follow NFTA’s current platform and accessibility instructions during rail renewal.

Groceries near Elmwood/North and farther up Elmwood

Price Rite at 250 Elmwood Avenue gives the Allentown search a grocery destination near the Elmwood/North junction. 211 WNY lists the store as open to everyone and links to the operator for current information.

Lexington Co-op at 807 Elmwood Avenue is a second option farther north, outside Allentown’s immediate Allen Street setting. It lists daily hours of 7 a.m.–11 p.m., checked October 18, 2026; the two stores involve different journeys from a home near Main Street or College Street.

Small greens and the Wilcox house add local destinations

Arlington Place homes surround Arlington Park, while houses also face the green at Days Park. These residential settings offer a different point of reference from a home directly on an Allen Street commercial block.

The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site occupies the Wilcox house at 641 Delaware Avenue, between North and Allen streets. Museum visits use guided tours, with advance reservations recommended; the operator identifies a stair-free rear entrance and an elevator to the second floor.
