Living in Eagle Rock: Colorado Boulevard, bus routes and Occidental

Eagle Rock’s Colorado Boulevard errands, Pasadena and Hollywood bus routes, Occidental housing rules, recreation programs and Caspar Avenue library.

Eagle Rock offers several distinct starting points for a home search: Colorado Boulevard for east–west bus travel and shopping, the area around Occidental College for a campus-based routine, and Eagle Vista Drive for the recreation center. A Pasadena-bound commute follows a different corridor from an Occidental-based day, while grocery shopping at the plaza and recreation on Eagle Vista Drive are separate trips.

This guide connects those locations with specific services and operating rules. Sources were reviewed October 20, 2026. For rental agreements and the wider LA network, the citywide guides at the end provide the next layer of detail.

Colorado Boulevard: errands and the Pasadena–Hollywood bus

Eagle Rock Plaza is at 2700 Colorado Boulevard. Its operator lists Seafood City and Target, making it a useful grocery-and-household-shopping destination on the western part of the corridor. The smaller commercial blocks farther along Colorado Boulevard offer a different shopping pattern; proximity to one part of the boulevard does not put every destination at your doorstep.

Metro Line 180 connects Colorado Boulevard with Pasadena, Glendale and Hollywood/Vine B Line station. The timetable uses Colorado/Figueroa as its Eagle Rock reference point. For a home search tied to a Pasadena job or a Hollywood rail connection, this is the first east–west route to investigate. Its PDF is dated June 22, 2025 and remained the version linked by Metro when reviewed.

Downtown and Hollywood: two other routes from the plaza

Line 81 serves Eagle Rock Plaza and follows the Figueroa Street corridor through Highland Park toward Downtown Los Angeles, continuing south toward Harbor Freeway station. This gives the plaza end of Eagle Rock a different journey pattern from the Colorado Boulevard trip to Pasadena. The bus map identifies A Line connections along its route; living in Eagle Rock does not itself mean having a rail station beside the home.

Line 217 also reaches Eagle Rock Plaza and continues through Glendale and Hollywood toward La Cienega/Jefferson E Line station. Its timetable includes Hollywood B Line and Wilshire/Fairfax D Line connections. It is a long cross-city route, and some departures cover only part of it. Use the served timepoint columns for the intended trip; an E Line destination in the route title does not mean every departure reaches it.

Moving for Occidental: settle housing eligibility before renting

Occidental College is a major local destination, but a nearby private rental is not automatically an option for every incoming student. The college’s housing office says students generally live on campus for their first three years. Seniors may live off campus with approval, and specified exceptions exist. Residential Education & Housing Services can resolve eligibility at 323-259-2531 or resed@oxy.edu before a student commits to a lease.

Campus parking has its own rules. Occidental’s parking policy requires visitors and vendors to obtain a dated temporary permit from Campus Safety at no charge. Students living off campus do not qualify as visitors. Ordinary campus parking zones are enforced Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; emergency and disabled zones are enforced around the clock. A household’s home parking arrangement and its campus access are therefore separate parts of the move.

Eagle Vista Drive: recreation with an evening window

The Eagle Rock Recreation Center at 1100 Eagle Vista Drive has basketball and tennis courts, baseball fields, fitness equipment, a children’s play area and picnic tables listed by LA County’s facility directory. The city-operated center’s regular hours are 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday–Friday and 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday; it is closed Sunday and holidays. These are center operating hours, not a promise that each class or court is available throughout them.

For a household planning after-school care or a regular activity, the program contact is 323-257-6948; the county also lists 323-341-5659 for child-care intake. Ask for the current program schedule and enrollment arrangements. The weekday evening window makes the center worth locating separately from a workplace commute or Colorado Boulevard errand.

Caspar Avenue: library errands and study space

The Eagle Rock Branch Library is at 5027 Caspar Avenue, with a parking lot and bicycle rack. Its regular schedule is Monday/Wednesday 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday noon–8 p.m. and Friday/Saturday 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; Sunday is closed. A Tuesday morning visit therefore needs a different plan from a Monday morning one.

The branch lists public computers, a scanner, wireless printing, Wi-Fi, Student Zone and a teen area. A scanner and wireless printing can handle documents without a home printer, while Student Zone and the teen area provide dedicated youth services. The branch contact is 323-258-8078.
