Telegraph Avenue for groceries and smaller shops

The Temescal business district follows Telegraph Avenue and adjoining streets, with restaurants and outdoor seating along the corridor. The district’s Alley directory includes Womb House Books and Sophie Tivona Paper, adding books and stationery to the area’s smaller shops.

MacArthur BART is on 40th Street

MacArthur BART is at 555 40th Street. A home near the 51st Street shops has a different station approach from one near 40th Street, so the same Temescal address label can mean a different walk before boarding.

MacArthur serves the Antioch–SFIA/Millbrae, Richmond–Millbrae/SFIA and Richmond–Berryessa/North San Jose lines. Its published timetable distinguishes weekday and weekend service. The destination and travel day determine which train or transfer works; rail information was checked October 18, 2026.

Borrowing tools for a move-in or garden project

The Oakland Tool Lending Library at 5205 Telegraph Avenue lends equipment for repairs, home improvement, gardening and landscaping. It is a free service for residents or property owners in Oakland, Emeryville and Piedmont who are over 18.

Registration requires a valid Oakland Public Library card, current photo identification, address verification and a signed waiver. A current lease or utility bill can establish a new resident’s address. The first loan is limited to two tools; after those are returned on time, the rules allow ten tools at a time, including up to three power tools.

The tool-library entrance is on the parking-lot side of the building facing 52nd Street, with a low-slope ramp. Regular Tuesday and Wednesday hours extend to 8 p.m.; Sunday is closed. Rules and hours were checked October 18, 2026.

A separate book-library entrance on Telegraph

Temescal Branch shares the 5205 Telegraph Avenue address with the Tool Lending Library. Its front entrance is on Telegraph, with a secondary rear entrance via the elevator. The multi-story building also offers internet computers, printing, a scanner and a reservable meeting room.

The collection includes English-language books, children’s books in Spanish, and adult books in Tigrinya and Amharic. These book-library services are in addition to the tool-lending collection at the same address. Facilities were checked October 18, 2026.
