About Strip District
Pittsburgh’s Strip District brings Penn Avenue food shopping, the Smallman Street Terminal and riverfront apartment buildings into a former industrial corridor beside downtown. Wholey’s closes at 5 p.m., while Route 91 serves Liberty Avenue for trips toward downtown and Lawrenceville.
Living in a converted factory
The Cork Factory at 2349 Railroad Street illustrates the Strip’s industrial-to-residential change: the former Armstrong Cork Factory now contains loft apartments with one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans. Its operator lists exposed brick, tall factory windows, open kitchens and in-unit laundry. Floor plans on the operator’s site let prospective renters see how bedrooms and living areas fit into the factory conversion; contact the property for current rents and lease terms.
Wholey’s closes at 5 p.m.
Wholey’s Market at 1711 Penn Avenue sells seafood, meat, produce, dairy and other groceries. Its published hours are Monday–Saturday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Wholey’s works as a daytime grocery stop, including for produce and dairy, but its 5 p.m. closing leaves little room for shopping after a conventional workday.
Route 91 links the Strip with downtown and Lawrenceville
PRT’s Route 91 runs between downtown and the Butler Street corridor in Lawrenceville. Its timetable uses Liberty Avenue at 21st Street as a Strip District timepoint toward downtown, and Liberty Avenue opposite 17th Street in the outbound direction. Penn Avenue shops and Smallman Street apartments therefore require a walk to the Liberty Avenue corridor.
The regular three-hour pass costs $2.75; transfers are free within three hours when using a card or mobile ticket. The June 28, 2026 timetable provides weekday, Saturday and Sunday service separately. Use the operator’s current alerts alongside it when planning a work trip.
Smallman Street shopping and visitor parking
The Terminal occupies the former produce building along Smallman Street from 16th to 21st streets. Opened in 1929, its long frontage helps explain the scale of the surrounding warehouse blocks; today it is a destination for shops and dining.
The Terminal has a public parking lot. Its visitor page also lists the 1600 Smallman Garage, across at 16th Street, for public use after 4 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends. Those visitor facilities do not establish whether parking is included with a nearby apartment.
An indoor outing at the downtown end
The Heinz History Center at 1212 Smallman Street brings Western Pennsylvania history, Mister Rogers exhibits and the Franco Harris Sports Museum into one building. Regular hours are daily, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., except New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas; admission is free for children aged 17 and under.
The museum currently warns of occasional noise and vibrations inside the building from its campus expansion at 13th Street and Penn Avenue.
