About Upper Lawrenceville
Upper Lawrenceville mixes older residential streets with Butler Street businesses, industrial sites and Contemporary Craft’s gallery and studios near 57th Street. ALDI provides a grocery destination at 450 56th Street, and Route 91 connects the Butler Street corridor with downtown.
Older houses beyond the Butler Street frontage
Lawrenceville’s residential design guide distinguishes front-lot-line rowhouses with shared side walls from hillside homes with front yards and porches. Upper Lawrenceville’s dated neighborhood photograph shows older brick houses beside St. Kieran Church and a sloping street. The image records the exterior in August 2017.
A grocery destination at 56th Street
ALDI at 450 56th Street provides a grocery-shopping option in Upper Lawrenceville’s Lawrenceville Shopping Center. Residents near the upper Butler Street blocks have this supermarket nearby, while the Strip District’s specialty food stores lie farther down the corridor toward downtown.
Route 91 reaches 57th Street; Route 93 turns earlier
Route 91 serves the Butler Street corridor with a timetable reference stop at 57th Street, continuing toward the Strip District and downtown. This places the downtown bus near Contemporary Craft’s gallery and studio buildings.
Route 93 turns away from Butler Street at 51st Street to serve Children’s Hospital, Bloomfield and Oakland. An Oakland trip from farther up Butler Street therefore includes reaching that route; the 93 does not run all the way along Butler to 57th Street. The operator publishes separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday tables.
Two craft buildings with different entrances
Contemporary Craft’s Raphael Building at 5645 Butler Street contains the main gallery, store, metals studios and laser-cutter studio. Timmons Studios at 5688 Butler Street houses the fiber and wood studios. Exhibitions and the store are free to enter.
The Raphael Building’s main entrance is accessible. At Timmons Studios, the accessible entrance is around the corner on 57th Street, rather than the main Butler Street entrance. Regular hours are Monday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., with Thursday opening extended to 7 p.m.; the organization is closed on Sundays and lists holiday closures separately.
The 62nd Street end remains a redevelopment area
At 6111 Butler Street near 62nd Street, the URA is seeking redevelopment proposals for a former industrial site. Its stated goals include relocating heavy industry and warehouses away from residentially intensive blocks to reduce truck traffic in the commercial district. The parcel is zoned for riverfront general industry.
