Buttermilk Falls State Park near Ithaca follows a stream through a steep gorge and a series of falls.

Woodland routes and the lower waterfall provide ways to appreciate the region’s layered rock and flowing water.
Check the state park’s live trail notices before choosing a walk. Gorge paths include many stone steps and can close seasonally or after hazardous weather; swimming is permitted only when the designated operation is open and supervised. The photograph shows the falls under particular flow conditions. Use marked routes, stay out of restricted water and plan footwear for wet or uneven surfaces.
