Heckscher State Park occupies a broad coastal landscape along Great South Bay, near East Islip and Great River.
Picnic groves, multiuse paths and shore views give the park appeal beyond its summer swimming season.
Use current state-park maps and notices to select an entrance and activity area. Lifeguarded beach swimming is seasonal, and the swimming pool is closed. Cottages, launches and reserved group spaces have separate arrangements. The photograph shows beach dunes during an earlier visit rather than current water conditions. Protect dune vegetation and stay within designated visitor areas.
