The Dalles Commercial Historic District brings together civic buildings, business blocks and architecture shaped by the city’s role as a Columbia River trading and transport center.

Brick and basalt buildings from different periods create a varied downtown streetscape close to the river.
Begin with a walk along public sidewalks, allowing time to look above shopfronts at older architectural details. The former Carnegie Library is one of the civic landmarks within the district. Museums, arts spaces and businesses have individual opening arrangements, so check separately before planning an interior visit. Follow current pedestrian access notices during events or street work.
Visitor details reviewed October 27, 2026. Consult primary place information for background, and confirm current access and operating arrangements before visiting. View on OpenStreetMap.
