About Neighborhood of the Arts

Neighborhood of the Arts combines Village Gate’s converted lofts and businesses with University Avenue’s museums, public sculpture and Route 9 connection to downtown.

Converted lofts at 274 North Goodman

Stern Properties’ lofts at Village Gate occupy a former printing-company building at 274 North Goodman Street. The operator describes one- and two-bedroom layouts, some extending over two stories, with open floor plans, parquet flooring and stainless-steel appliances.

Its amenities list says laundry is in the building and indoor parking is available. Other listed facilities include a fitness center and intercom entry, with a published one-pet limit. The operator’s page provides the contact route for a particular loft.

Route 9 on University Avenue

RTS Route 9 University lists Village Gate Square, Memorial Art Gallery, George Eastman Museum and Blossom Loop among its destinations. University Avenue/Goodman Street is a scheduled timepoint between the downtown Transit Center and the eastern part of the route.

The current linked timetable lists 30-minute service from 6 a.m.–6 p.m. on weekdays and hourly service at other operating times. University Avenue/Goodman Street appears in both directions, with separate weekday and Saturday/Sunday/holiday departure tables.

Free outdoor art at Memorial Art Gallery

Memorial Art Gallery is at 500 University Avenue. Its Centennial Sculpture Park is described by the museum as always open and free, giving the arts corridor an outdoor destination beyond ticketed exhibitions.

The indoor museum follows a separate schedule and admission policy: it lists Wednesday–Sunday opening, with later Thursday and second-Friday hours, and Monday/Tuesday closure. Its on-site parking is for guests and Creative Workshop students. The museum’s local page is linked below.

Market shopping beyond the arts corridor

Rochester Public Market at 280 North Union Street is a separate food-shopping destination beyond University Avenue’s arts businesses. It opens year-round on Tuesday and Thursday, 6 a.m.–1 p.m., and Saturday, 6 a.m.–3 p.m., except federal holidays. Vendors sell produce, meat, seafood, dairy, baked goods and other foods; the market office is 585-428-6907.
