About Burbank Gardens Historic District

Burbank Gardens is a residential district south of downtown Santa Rosa, with small bungalows, cottages and some duplexes and apartments. Homes often have rear garages reached by narrow driveways. Luther Burbank Home & Gardens and nearby Juilliard Park offer different outdoor settings, while resident street-parking permits depend on the address.

Bungalows, rear garages and the avenue edge

The City describes Burbank Gardens as a district of modest homes, especially bungalows from the 1920s and 1930s, with some duplexes and apartment buildings. Small front porches and stoops face the street. Detached single-car garages are generally behind the house, often reached by narrow driveways along a side property line.

Santa Rosa Avenue has a different mix of buildings from the district’s interior streets. The City identifies many avenue properties as noncontributing to the historic district’s character, while recognizing landmark sites including Luther Burbank Home & Gardens and Park Apartments.

Garden access through the seasons

Luther Burbank Home & Gardens is a public destination within the historic area, separate from the surrounding residential properties. Its operator lists daily garden hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April through October, changing to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from November through March.

The gardens allow service animals but no pets. A free cellphone audio tour is available, while guided house tours use a separate seasonal schedule and admission fee.

Playground and picnics at Juilliard Park

Nearby Juilliard Park, at 227 Santa Rosa Avenue, has a playground, bocce courts, picnic tables, gardens and grass areas. The City lists street parking only and first-come, first-served picnic tables. Events require a park permit; the Church of One Tree is currently unavailable for reservations.

Street parking around Tupper and Hendley

Tupper, Hendley, Charles and Brown Streets appear in the Burbank Gardens residential parking-zone list. The City warns that only qualifying addresses on those streets can apply, and links a zone map. This zone uses the annual June 30 expiration cycle. Applications require residence and vehicle documents, and no more than three permits are issued per eligible address.
