About Escalante

Escalante is an east Tempe residential neighborhood north of Apache Boulevard, with postwar subdivisions, light rail on the corridor and a multi-generational center on Orange Street. Thew Elementary and the center shape local routines, but after-school places are limited and the outdoor pool operates seasonally.

A residential neighborhood with postwar roots

Escalante grew westward from Victory Acres through subdivisions established between 1945 and 1956, including Lola Vista, Rancho El Dorado, Lee Park and Randall Terrace. The city’s history describes residents buying lots to build homes as well as moving into existing houses.

Apache Boulevard is the rail connection

Smith-Martin/Apache Boulevard station serves the A Line along Apache Boulevard, south of the residential streets. The line connects Tempe with Mesa and downtown Phoenix; trips onto the north–south B Line require a change at the Downtown Hub.

Community-center access and fitness costs

Escalante Multi-Generational Center is at 2150 East Orange Street, one block west of Price Road. Building hours are Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1–6 p.m. Individual activity areas have their own schedules.

Facility membership is free and available to Tempe and non-Tempe residents. Fitness-room use and adult open-gym programs also require a $1 drop-in payment or a fitness membership, listed at $10 for three months or $25 for a year. Membership registration is handled at the front desk.

Thew Elementary and a full after-school program

Thew Elementary is at 2130 East Howe Avenue; its office number is 480-894-5574. The district’s address lookup and boundary maps identify school options for a particular home. Enrollment questions go to enrollment@tempeschools.org.

The center’s free after-school program is reserved for Thew students in grades 1–5 and requires registration. At our October 24, 2026 review, the city listed the 2026–27 program as full, with a waitlist open. Call 480-350-5802 for the current position before relying on it for childcare.

Outdoor recreation continues beyond swimming season

Escalante Park is at River Road and Orange Street, with published hours of 6 a.m.–midnight. Its playground, basketball and volleyball courts, fields and picnic areas are separate from the center’s indoor activities.

The center’s outdoor pool has lap lanes, slides, splash features and zero-depth entry, but is seasonal. The city lists it as closed for the season, with August 30 as its last operating day in 2026. The pool page provides subsequent operating updates.
